Nordhausen

Nordhausen, also known as the “Thuringian gateway to the Harz Mountains”, offers a wealth of sights and leisure activities. A ride on the Harz narrow-gauge railroad is also a must. The surrounding area is also ideal for outdoor activities such as hiking and mountain biking.

Art and culture

Nordhausen offers a number of cultural institutions. The Kunsthaus Meyenburg, the Flohburg Museum and the Nordhausen Theater enrich the cultural landscape. Museums such as the Echter Nordhäuser traditional distillery and the Tobacco Storehouse Museum shed light on the local history of grain distilling and tobacco production. Once you have had your fill of these fantastic institutions, you can continue on to Sondershausen, for example.

In the music and mining town of Sondershausen, a palace ensemble that is second to none awaits you. The former residence of the Schwarzburg-Sondershausen princes is one of the most beautiful castles in Thuringia. A guided tour is like a journey through time, from Romanticism to Historicism. The Thuringian Castle Festival is an annual musical highlight and definitely worth a visit.

Family and leisure

The town of Nordhausen was the mechanical engineering center in the north of Thuringia. The IFA Museum preserves this great Nordhausen engineering tradition and shows the “IFA” location with its multifaceted history.

There are underground discoveries to be made in Sonderhausen. The RE 56 takes around 30 minutes from Nordhausen to the Sonderhausen adventure mine. Getting off at “Glückauf” station is an invitation to visit the oldest accessible potash mine in the world. A truck takes you through the caverns for an impressive 10 kilometers. The canoe trip on the underground salt lake is a little more peaceful...

Nature and activity

If you are traveling in Nordhausen and love nature, you should make your way to the Hohnstein castle ruins. Nestled in the mixed forests of the southern Harz, the castle, which is over 900 years old, offers a lot of history, really great views and an inn for culinary delights. The Harz narrow-gauge railroad station is just 100 meters from Nordhausen train station. From there, you can get to the “Sophienhof” stop. This is the starting point of your hike on the Südharzer Dampflok Steig - a themed hiking trail about technology.
