Brauhaus zum Löwen | Mühlhausen

Of lions and beer

The historic building in the heart of Mühlhausen houses a cozy hotel and restaurant.

The house in Felchtaer Strasse in Mühlhausen looks like something from one of the Grimm's fairy tales. The door is flanked by two iron wall sconces that throw a warm light onto the half-timbered building, bent by the centuries. Hardly surprising, as the house, originally a farmhouse, served as an apothecary shop from 1780 onwards until it was used as a brewery, inn and hotel from 1992 onwards, is quite ancient. "We started with fourteen rooms and now have 104," says hotel director Marco Fongern. Maybe it is down to the wooden ceiling beams, the small Georgian bar windows or the historic photographs of Mühlhausen on the walls that the atmosphere in the "Brauhaus zum Löwen" is so homely, rustic and cosy. However, it might also be the beer brewed by the in-house brewery that tempts its guests through the door.
