Eisenach

The history of Eisenach is closely linked to automobile construction, the Wartburg Castle and the personalities Martin Luther and Johann Sebastian Bach. Beautiful corners, winding alleyways and architectural monuments from almost all major eras and the villa district from the Wilhelminian era await you. The city is also a great starting point for tours to the regions of Thuringia.

Art and culture

In Eisenach, you can follow in Luther's footsteps and be fascinated by great history: The Luther House can be visited on foot through Eisenach town center. If you take bus no. 3 for around half an hour from the central bus station - the bus stop is opposite the train station - you can experience UNESCO World Heritage at Wartburg Castle and also enjoy a breathtaking view. The bus stop is around 550 meters away.

Back at Eisenach station, it is worth taking a 25-minute ride to Gotha. In the royal seat, you will find one of the most important art museums in Thuringia, the Ducal Museum, just half a kilometer from the station. Vis-à-vis, you have other museums with unique collections on art, history and nature at Friedenstein Castle as well as the underground corridors of the casemates.

Family and leisure

From Eisenach, you can take the bus and train to Viba Nougat World. After a journey of around an hour and a half, the sweetest restaurant in the area and the adventure worlds await you. You can round off your stay in the half-timbered town of Schmalkalden with a stroll through the old town (approx. 5 - 10 min bus ride). On the way back to Eisenach, you can take a short detour to the Bad Salzungen graduation house. There you can take part in a guided tour or literally immerse yourself in the world of brine.

Bad Langensalza should definitely be on the itinerary for your Thuringia vacation. If you take the RB 20 and RB 1 lines for around 40 minutes in the morning, you can expect an exciting day in the spa and rose town. Ten parks and themed gardens, the Thuringian Pharmacy Museum and the children's adventure world “Rumpelburg”, for example, offer many discoveries for young and old.  On the way back to Eisenach, a stop at the wild cat village of Hütscheroda is well worthwhile. A wild cat village with a display area, a multimedia forum, various trails and much more are waiting to be discovered.

Nature und activity

Opposite Eisenach train station is the central bus station (ZOB). From there, you can take bus number 190 to the Mariental stop and take a hike along the Drachenschlucht gorge. Below Wartburg Castle, a stream has dug almost ten meters deep into the rocks and created a 200-metre-long path through the gorge that you can walk along. The Dragon Gorge is one of the most exciting geological monuments in Thuringia and should definitely be in your vacation diary.

“Glück auf!” could also be the motto on this day. Not far from Eisenach, about an hour's drive away (bus 110 or RB 41/bus 100), you will reach the Merkers adventure mine. At a depth of 800 meters, the sparkling crystal grotto will make your eyes shine. There is a unique atmosphere underground that is brought to life by mysterious stories. Back on earth, you can then immerse yourself in 100 years of mining history. If you'd rather go up high and climb to the top of the jungle, you should take bus 150 from Eisenach central bus station to Thiemsburg in the Hainich National Park. In around 45 minutes you will be at the canopy walk, one of the most beautiful treetop walks in Germany. In addition to the experience in the treetops, you can discover the national park center, the root cave and much more.
